Christmas is a time when Christians around the world come together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a season that reminds us of the importance of embracing diversity –  breaking through the things that divide us and centering on loving one another.

Recent global, national and local events have brought to the forefront so many of our differences. In times like these it is crucial for Christian communities to lead the way in promoting love and togetherness. The essence of Christianity lies in what we know as the Greatest Commandment - Matthew 22:36-39. Jesus is asked, ‘Lord, what is the Greatest Commandment?’ He responds, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. And Love your neighbor as yourself.’  Is there a better time to put this commandment into action than seeking out ways to love your ‘neighbor’ during this Christmas season? 

When we extend our hearts to ‘neighbors’ of all backgrounds within our own community, we create a space where love knows no boundaries. In doing so, we learn from one another's traditions and perspectives, and we find common ground. This can even impact our emotional and relational well-being. Embracing others with open hearts combats isolation and fear and we find comfort in knowing that we are part of a more loving community.

The core message of Christmas is about the gift of love God gave us in the form of His Son. Let’s make love, sharing, and togetherness our theme this Christmas. Look for ways to love those in your community that may be different than you. In doing so, we all demonstrate the unifying nature of God’s love.
